Activities

Our monthly meetings are well attended. We usually meet at 2.00pm on the first Friday of the month at The North Deal Centre on Golf Road. The meetings last for two hours. We have local speakers, craft activities and games afternoons. There is time for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat with fellow members. Stroke survivors and carers are welcome. We look forward to seeing you.

Our weekly Deal pier walk is also popular.  Many of our members enjoy a very gentle walk (you choose how far you would like to walk), a chat and a nice hot cuppa in a nearby cafe.  It would be great to see you if you are able to come along. You can join us every Thursday at Deal pier entrance, 1045 for 11am on Thursdays, until about 12 noon.

We have an exercise class at the Golf Road Centre on Mondays from 2.30-3.30pm and every Wednesday 1-2pm.

We have a range of activities available for members and are open to any suggestions for new ones. ‘Click through’ here: News – Deal and District Strokes (dealdistrictstrokes.org) for the most recent Newsletter for information.

In December 2023 we had another delicious Christmas dinner at the Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club. Prior to that we had a very creative meeting making fashion items out of foil!

In September we were also creative during a visit to Mudpie Studio in Cheriton to paint ceramic items that we collected once they were fired. We also had a musical item at our monthly meeting on the 1st September.

In August we had an art class at our monthly meeting and a fish and chip lunch in Walmer. In July we visited Quex Park Museum with its range of activities, and in June had a lunchtime meal at Aspendos on Deal seafront. During May we had a lovely party to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. A big Thank You to everyone who helped out, and especially to Diane and Louise for all their hard work.  We also visited Battle of Britain Memorial in Capel-le-Ferne.

Last year club members enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner at the Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club.  Earlier in 2022 they made hot cross buns (and rumour has it that they also enjoyed eating them!). We also enjoyed a wonderful party for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and a fantastic performance of Oaklahoma! by the St Margaret’s Players.  Reports and photos of some recent events can be found here: Events – Deal and District Strokes (dealdistrictstrokes.org).

Other outings have included: the Dover Transport Museum (very interesting, so much to see); Wingham Wildlife Park (a lovely day out); the Mudpie Ceramic Studio in Cheriton, where we painted pre-made ceramic items; and a lovely visit to Walmer Castle and its gardens.  We have enjoyed meals at Aspendos in Deal and Dover, The Courtyard in Deal, Salentino’s Italian Restaurant on Deal seafront, Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club, and an afternoon tea at the Elham Valley Vineyard.

Although it is out of date, the most recent programme of events is shown here for an idea of what we do, and for contact information etc:  DDS Programme January ’20

When possible we have a tree at the Trinity Church Christmas Tree Festival, where the last tree was beautifully decorated with hundreds of individually-made hand shapes, to reflect and pay tribute to the many helping hands that assist stroke survivors and our club. For Christmas 2022 we had a tree with lovely, handmade purple decorations at Kingsdown church.
